| Details: | The DfEE is running a pilot programme to develop masterclasses for gifted and talented children linked to specialist schools. There are currently ten projects, each providing masterclasses in subjects related to the school’s specialism for pupils from the surrounding area. The subjects include maths, technology, ICT, languages, sports and performing arts. The structure of each masterclass programme is different, though most involve a sequence of weekend and/or evening sessions. The projects recruit from their own and neighbouring schools and will already have recruited participants for this year. Each project has its own selection criteria: several rely mainly on teachers’ nominations; others are making some use of tests. There is no charge to parents.
The ten project schools are:
- Biddick School, Washington, Tyne and Wear
- Brooke School CTC, Corby, Northamptonshire
- Cowes High School, Cowes, Isle of Wight
- Dixons CTC, Bradford
- Elliott School, London SW15
- Haydon School, Pinner, Middlesex
- Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School, Lancaster
- Lincoln School of Science and Technology, Lincoln
- St Thomas More School, Blaydon on Tyne, Tyne and Wear
- Theale Green School, Theale, Reading

| Details: | NAGC is a national charity established in 1967 to assist by all possible means children with outstanding gifts and talents to fulfil their potential and to give support to parents, teachers and others professionally concerned with their development. NAGC is a membership organisation offering advice, information and the support and experience of educationalists and other parents. Its branches offer parent-run Explorers' Clubs which provide stimulating and enriching activities for all children in the family in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Families attending must be members. The annual subscription is £27, but this will be waived in cases of financial hardship. A small charge is made for participation in Explorers' Clubs to cover the costs of activities.
